Looking for some original Mustang concept sketches
« on: February 24, 2020, 12:16:59 PM »
I found this 2 page article that shows several original sketches of the Mustang design development studies along with the early concepts.
While I have two of these (with the line through), I don't have the others and I'm hoping someone else might (stars indicate wanted sketches)

If you have photos of any of these please post them or email to me (PM if you don't have my email).

Thanks for any help.
Rich

Here's the one design of the two design sketches I already had in my files.
It looks like a '63 Pontiac Tempest with some Mustang details.

Rich, here's a couple that were in the magazine "Mustang Guide" printed by Car Life magazine...1965, look to be from the same

series ?

Unfortunately the way they were printed part of the image is cut off, maybe if some one else has that issue the lay out could

be slightly different ?

Thanks Mike.
It looks like sketch2 is one I was looking for. A 7/8 sized T-bird style.
I might know someone with that issue who can help to see it there's a full size uncut tail end photo of it.

Rich, are you looking for actual paper prints of these sketches ? If you dig around on the net, there are people that offer stuff like

that, you might get lucky. Here's a link to one company, they don't seem to have what your after, but gives an idea of what's out

there. What you show in your first post, what magazine and time frame is that from ? I'll dig into my paper and see if I can find

 anything more

Yes. Mike thanks that link. I have not seen it before either.
 :)

Your help cracked the door open on the 2 page article I posted. I didn't know the magazine it was in, but searched the header name and found it!
It was in Esquire magazine, noted as May 1, 1964. I found a larger image of those pages and with it I could see the text.
Here's the larger images of the early Mustang concepts from the new jpeg I was able to save. I'd still like to find larger versions of these sketches, but at least now I can see them.

This first one you helped to find a larger photo of. It was named the Ford Median, as a smaller T-Bird style.
I haven't found any full size clay models of it, but I think it evolved into the Stilletto design.

Here's two more full size clay studies of this Stilletto.
Apparently Ford did more work on this design than I first thought as this appears to be a fiberglass buck.

A number of pics of them are also in Gary L. Witzenburgs Mustang documentation incl. a write up of the story.
Stiletto, Median, Cougar, Allegro, Avanti > Avventura...

I don't recall his name, but thanks for reply!
I'll have to take a look at what I can find on him and the documentaries.

That Median/Stiletto carried a lot more of Ford's design language of the time. Looks like it could have been cool in it's own right but I am thankful it didn't prevail over the Mustang.

A number of these books are sold in used condition, it is an obsolete book, published in 1979. With photo material from Karl Ludvigsen.
All concepts pictured on August 16th, 1962 in the Design Center courtyard were the 7 different produced by the various studios for the exec review, the chosen one was shown on September 9th again in the courtyard of Ford design. Obviously not all studio teams gave up after that decision, but created more alternatives along the way. Including the Mustang I GT44.

Thanks for the added info everyone. I did look and see Gary wrote/released that book about 40 years ago. I can't help but wonder if I've collected most if not all of those photo contained inside from other sources (books/internet), but I will look for it to see what I might be missing, such as these sketches.

The second sketch in the article was of the Advventura which later became the Allegro show car. It was publically shown at the NY Worlds Fair in 1963 (also in Brussels). The full size model was finished in July 62 as the Adventtura in what I suspect was fiberglass.
While I have many photos of it, I don't have this sketch in a larger size, yet.
