I am in costa mesa for some work related meetings. I will be in LA from 08/02-08/06. Since I'm from back east and restoring a San Jose built '65, I was wondering if anyone had some nice rust free CA front fenders for me to look at/buy? I figured if I could find a set, then I would ship them home before I left. Any help would be appreciated.

california fenders tend to rust in the inside pocket. its caued from dirt that get trapped form lack of rain and holds humidity. sounds crazy but true. i friend has some cars stored in mojave and they have rusted out over the years.

Maybe they were rusty  before they were parked?

nope. the guy is my landlord and parked them there 20 years ago and they were solid. ALL his cars up there including an 86 t-bird and several newer cars other people have up there are rusting out. the wind blows dust in the cracks and it soaks up moisture in the air and the combination rust metal cause there isnt a steady rain to keep the dirt wased out. i never saw a rusted door bottom or fender bottom on an older car in missippi. in other parts of the country where it rains a lot the rain keeps the dirt washed out of those areas. a lot of people here in cali think that ALL mustang doors and fenders rust. i tell them that doesnt happen in missippi and they look at me in disbelief. yeah my landlord is freakin out cause ALL those mercs are factory 427 cars. the one with the circles was owned and raced by a famous race car driver but i forgot who. he has a few edsels with 427 side oilers that he put in them. that black car in the foto is a rare 427 all glass front end car. the b429 engine in the foto next to my 65 mustang belongs to him and at least its inside the garage.

427 Edsel would be a sleeper alright.
Calif. just happens to have a pretty long coast line that can be unkind to sheet metal as well.
Gotta beware everywhere, 'cause rust never sleeps!
