I have one of the Holley service replacement carburetors and want to set it up to run on my 1966 Hertz car.  I have a mid-1980s 650 CFM double pumper on it right now and it's time to make the car look right again.

I know that Holley will restore and refinish the carburetor for a price -  last time I looked they wanted about $450.

My question is this - where is my best shot at getting a good cleanup, refinish and setup on the carb?  Is Holley the best shot out there, or is there another carb shop that specializes in carbs like this?  I can't say that price is no object, but I'm willing to pay for a guaranteed good outcome.  A good outcome is defined as an attractive, accurate finish; properly setup; with careful attention to all of the internals to run well and flawlessly for a long time.  I want to bolt it on when I get it back and have it at least be close.  I'll jet it to my engine and elevation, obviously.

Any recommendations?  Thanks for your input.

I had Pony Carbs restore my 715 several years ago.  http://www.ponycarburetors.com/

Besides a basic restoration,  I asked them to keep the finish stock looking, and to do what they could to minimize the off-idle hesitation that comes from having a big carb on a relatively small engine. They did a great job on all counts.  That carb performs much better than the 650 dp I'm using with my Paxton now. I had the 715 installed when I took a 1600 miles trip last summer. i went from 850' elevation in TX to 7000'+ in New Mexico.  I only had to make one carb adjustment: at 3000' I bumped up the idle speed slightly. A great running carb.  They have restored two 715's and 4 or 5 HiPo Autolite's for me over the years.  I've read where others are not that satisfied with them, but I've  always been pleased with their work..

This guy is good.  He did my 715 and he knows Holley's in and out.

You may want to check with Joe Benetic in IL.  Phone:  618-397-3580.  I don't believe he does the internet thing.

I had Pony carbs do mine about 6-7 years ago.  Still looks great as I had them do the full concours resto.  The owner is a little eccentric but thats OK.  Sometimes experts know too much.  Seems my carb was from March of 1966 and he thought that was way too early for my October 66 built 67 GT 350.  Na, I said.  Shelby buys those carbs by the pallet.  And he does. So he made the prober date plate for the date the carb was made.

Pony Carbs did mine. They did an amazing job. They tuned the carb to my engine specs. I bolted the thing on and it fired right up with just some minor tweeks. Runs perfect looks perfect. Before and after pics below. Its aN ORIGINAL 715 carb SMS from 67 GT350

Ive had carbs done by them as well over the years and the attitude is enough for me to go elsewhere. They always quote the job and then when you get the bill its way over, almost double.  they also swapped out the original choke parts on a 65 Hipo carb for repro parts and then said it wasnt worth using or some BS. I didnt get my originals back.  I could never get that carb to idle below 1200 after they did it.  They blamed it on ignition, youll find that they are NEVER wrong. Its always someone elses fault.  i took an old $20 junk  1850 holley that had been sitting in the back of my garage for at least 5 years , bolted it on and it idled perfect BUT  it was not their fault.  i pulled it apart (which VOIDS  their warranty)   you cant even touch the idle screws - read their warranty. Cleaned out some glass beads I found in there and redid it myself and it worked fine after that.  Oh yea,  they lost my original tag too.

I don't doubt they have or had a bad attitude, or that they went over the job quote. What I don't understand why you  gave them repeat business.

Wow - that's a lot of good information.  I can follow up easily and thi sis really helpful.

What's eveyone seeing on prices?  Is the $450 price Holley is talking about in the ball park, or are we talking much less or more?

rather than rely on information from us that may be out of date I would suggest getting in touch with the vendors we mentioned to get the prices yourself. More  up to date & accurate.

Posted this on the other thread regarding this question.  Not sure if you saw it.  Some others were positive on Carl as a source.

I have used Carl's Ford Parts.
He restores, refinishes, rebuilds and sells Holley's and can do whatever you need.

Hope this helps
