I know this is a straight forward task but figured I would ask. I am trying to gather as much knowledge from “experts” on do and don’ts of carpet installation. One of my biggest concerns if the overlap between the front and rear sections where it is under the sill plates. It’s been about 25 years since my last carpet installation project and I remember this being a hassle. Any advice to guide me in a professional installation is appreciated. Thanks

I have not installed a carpet recently , but have heard rumors of the "new" carpets fitting very poorly.

unless you buy the premium carpet .

My car was recarpeted before i bought it(pre 1982)and they screwed up pretty bad where it meets the fold down rear seat.It looks like they had to cut slits in it to make it fit and also used what looks like spray adhesive to secure it as it doesnt seem to butt up (or under )the rear seat properly..My point is to look at the "big picture "when you install it i.e. make sure you "prefit " it properly so you dont" come up short"...My 2 cents ...Good Luck!!!!!!Trent

Is ther no pre-cut hole for the shifter?  That would be the determining factor, no?

And, well at least my early car did not have those locator screws between the seat and the sill plates, but, how are you going to prove that to the jugdes? Remove the sill plate and point out, look, no holes?  So, the screws are there now.  It's O-K.

Anyone that carries the carpet can order it - some of the bigger shops should carry it (especially in black) stock.

Make sure you unpack it as soon as you get it to make sure its right  - you don't want to try and return it after it sits around for 6 months. Make sure the carpet was put in the mold straight (the rear cut edge of the front section should match up with the last row of loops. Seen some that were really crocked.

The Premium is only the standard with an extra thick backing - not great but plenty better than the standard.

Found the light use of a heat gun helps allot in forming the stuff

Good luck

There is a hole cut out for the shifter. Carpet is made by ACC. There are two holes where screws held the carpet next to each front seat. i removed the original carpet and the screws myself 16 years ago. None of the floor panels were replaced and I have pictures of the holes for reference. The carpet has been in the box for 2 years and removed last week. Where the front and back sections overlap under the sill plate will result in a bulge. Should this be trimmed out for just one layer of carpet at that point?

Shawn,
I just looked at 5 pairs of original sill plates all have a bulge where  carpet overlaps.
I usually trim off bound edge under sill plate to get it to lay flat.
and trim carpet to match height of rocker and not wrap over top.

ACC makes a great premium carpet kit. Might check google for ACC premium carpet kit.
If the car is concourse I understand using the factory sill plates but if not then buy the stainless ones that are much better and thicker for ease of installation. Scott Drake carries them.

A tip on installing the carpet.
Leave a little extra space for the carpet when installing the outer seatbelts. Make the hole in the carpet for the outer seatbelt a little above the threaded hole. This will eliminate a puckering crease line when the bolts are tightened.
Doing this will allow the carpet to ''flow'' into and fill the floorpan.
