66 over the counter wood steering wheel
« on: July 22, 2019, 07:59:45 PM »
I have a nice Shelby wood steering wheel for sale, I guess, I was using it for display and maybe I don't really have a need for it anymore, I wasn't thinking about selling it until I read a post about steering wheels and it got my wheels turning. Anyway I am having some work done on my GT350 so...hey....this is a hobby, right? So why not sell it to help pay for stuff I am having done!

Let's start with $3500.00 and go from there, offers? PayPal friends and family payment, please. PM me. I can also text you 2 more pics of the lower spoke front and back.

It is a 66 Shelby wheel, I was corrected, thank you!

Hi,

This is a 66 version because of the turn signal cancel pins.  The 67 version of this wheel does not have these pins.

The horn button emblem also suggest 66.

Best of luck

Hi 557,

You  are thinking about the 67 OEM wheel.  The wheel offered for sale here was available in 1968, long after the 67 and 66 Shelby Mustangs were made.  SAI offered two version of this wheel, 66 and 67, the 66 ID'd below as 3rd version. There are three basic versions of 66 wood wheel, all Over The Counter, but the first two were available while the cars were new, ID'd as 1st and 2nd.  All three versions below have the turn signal cancel pins.  Hope that helps.

Take care

Cory

    Cory,
I have one that looks like version 2 but uses the factory ( orange painted , clip on)  canceling method like the OP has , not "drilled holes" with pins. I t also has the Shelby American logo horn button.

Hi Randy,

All the OTC wood wheels for 1966 that I have see have the cancel pins welded on.  I will post an images later tonight.  I have not tried to install a clip on to see if it fits or not.  Are you sure your wheel is not a OEM 67 with the clip on?  The OEM 67 also has a shorter hub section when compared to the 1st and 2nd versions for 1966.

Cory it certainly could be a '67 wheel as there are no welded areas. Wow , guess my wheel just jumped in value!
Thanks as always. I thought my original '65 wheel was good.

To my knowledge there were two versions of '67 Assembly line steering wheels, both had polymer "tabs" the difference was "long" or "short" versions of the "tabs".

There were replacement/over-the-counter wheels available that didn't have the tabs.  Some probably made it onto cars as the Assembly Line versions were prone to cracking - splinters, see SAAC registry footnotes for examples of warranty notes.  Dealers may have replaced some with over-the-counter wheels out of dealer stock.

Edit: added image of '67 early wheel back of hub...note tab too.
Edit II: more '67 Assembly line steering wheel images

(Just trying to help clarify all the variables)

Hi all,

Here are some more images for clarification for the two OTC wheels offered in 1968.  Also, I now have to clarifiy for all the 66 wood wheels cancel pins, they are all welded on, no clip on's.

Also, the hubs are different heights, 66 is 1 & 1/16 and the 67 is 13/16 or there abouts.

I hope this helps.

Based on your close up image of the cancel pins in reply No. 9,  your wheel appears to be the non-OEM 1967 OTC version with the clip on cancel pins.  It looks like a real nice wheel, set up for a 66 model Mustang or GT350.

Best of luck
