  Straight out of the plumbing supply house's mouth: How long your water heater lasts is ALL dependant on the Ph of the water running through it.
  So, here in the Chicago area with Lake Michigan as the supply, my "12 year" water heater has lasted 15 years...so far.

Here in northern Ohio good ole Lake Erie gives easy 12+ years on water heaters. I replaced a Sears after 17 years just because I thought it was too old. Several plumbers have said having a bigger then previous capacity(gallons) increases the lifetime. Of course it pays them more!
