I just thought I would share this with you all, because I know you like to see "new" cars not already on the forum.

This past Saturday I went to a small Ford show in Salem, OR (home town).  The show is fairly small, maybe 60-70 cars total.  It has a wide variety of Fords.  The local Mustang club puts on the show.  A nice show when considering there are many other shows in the area that are hard to compete with.  There were some cool cars, but I really get excited for Shelbys.

6S390 and 6S449 were there.  In the pictures below, 390 has stripes and 449 doesn't.  Both owners didn't know each other and this was the first time they met.  Neither owner planned on seeing each other there.  It turns out that the owner of 390 used to own 449 back in the 70's.  Both owners were great guys and were very nice to talk to.   390 lives local to me and 449 is from the Portland area.  The owner of 449 also mentioned he has two 65 GT350s back at home too.    That two hours I was at the show made my weekend!  I didn't expect to see any Shelbys let alone two!  It was very cool!

Both are early Hertz cars.  449 had the Mico master cylinder.

    Brian ,
440 is the lowest number Hertz ( non prototype that is). IIRC 449 is one of the San Francisco brake test group cars( white with blue stripes) which included 476. Mine , 477 was an LA brake test group car ( also white with blue stripes). None in these two groups had roof stripes.  It would be interesting to see if 449 has a '65 round back axle housing like several in the group did.

Randy,
I didn't pay attention to the rearend on 449, so I can't answer that for you.   According to the owner and registry 449 is one of the San Francisco brake test group cars.  You would know more than me that 440 is the lowest Hertz, but I thought 390 was.  I need to reread my registry, maybe I interpreted it incorrectly.  Thank you for your reply.

Both had 4-speeds.  Both had fold down back seats.  449 had a wood steering wheel. Both didn't have the H on the rocker stripes.  Both had open letter valve covers.  390 had 10 spokes and 449 had Magnums.

I have posted a few other pictures I took.  First picture is the engine of 390 and the rest are 449 (the file name has the VIN in it).

While on topic I remembered that I took photos of 390 back in 2014 at the Champoeg Park All Ford Show.  I have attached those photos here.

    Thanks Brian!
449 has a Holley like 477 did when I bought it 43+ years ago. It didn't have the H then but it did have a "patched" section long enough to have had an H . So when I did the last repaint , I used NOS stripes and a hand cut H as "I" felt it was there at one time. So little is known about this group of cars and it appears the "brake testing" information wasn't "logged" as you would do in normal testing procedures. Rarer than an R model but who cares? LOL  It's just a part of the history , not hype.
    Thanks again.

No the brake test cars were delivered to Hertz. Vin numbers are documented. All automatics .

Jim B., with 449, has done a good job getting it back on the road. His other 2 1965
Shelbys and Ford car collection is a sight to behold.   PeelOut
