Came across this article:

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/1967-1968-shelby-gt-350-gt-5001.htm

"At mid-year, the GT-500's 428 engine (rated at 360 bhp for '68) was replaced by a 428 Cobra Jet, which had made a name for itself in drag racing. Although the new CJs wore the high-performance intake manifold and cylinder heads from the mighty 427, advertised horsepower somehow dropped to 335 -- though actual output was undoubtedly higher. Cars with this engine were called GT-500KR ("King of the Road"). Due to a shortage of 428s, a few GT-500s were fitted with 390-cid V-8s (much to the chagrin of their owners), while a few others once again got the 400-bhp 427."

A example of a article perpetuating a urban myth.

I believe that you could try to order (was on the order form) a 427 in 1968.

There is one website you will never have to go to again. Neither the 390 or 427 was used in the production 1968 Shelbys.

Sure you could TRY. Lots of pre release info , shop manuals, owners manuals , tire pressure decals, etc but NO cars produced. Even the "unicorn" supposedly driving around in Palm Springs Ca. wan't real. Seems someone plunked a GTE engine in a '68 ( the Cougar vin was the spoiler to the charade) and was trying to pass it off as a real deal "factory special". OOOPS No I can't remember what it was as I got asked to leave when I pointed it out. I think the guy's name was David and he was going to call the cops on me ( for what reason I don't know) so I just left while he screamed obscenities at me. Funny he was cordial up to that point.

I guess if you are only smart enough to copy things for your website, you are not smart enough to know whats real.

Does anybody else have this issue?  While standing next to your authentic shelby at a local cruise, 2 guys come over to check out your car and say "this must be a clone ".  It happens to me twice every year.   Lately I don't bother to correct them and enjoy listening to them try and convince each other which parts on the car make it a fake.

Yes, I put a card on the dash stating some of the unique Shelby features and dates and walk away...
