Opinions sought
Idea's wanted
Suggestions considered

Each month in the secret basement of one Howard C. Pardee the collective minds of the SAAC Convention Planing Committee meet to discuss, huddle & plan out future SAAC conventions
While Howard supplies the Fresca and Dr Pepper soda. Creative minds try to come up with new and innovative idea's to trill the membership at large.....

So here's the deal ...What are you missing ..What do you want to see or do at this convention and beyond
Maybe we can add it to the convention activities if not this year, then down the road

Track events
track time / Racing / Drag Racing / Autocross
Car shows / Popular / Concours
   Swap meets

Social Activities
   Local car driving tours
   Tech night sessions
   Host Dinner night
   Social get together evenings
Shop tours of local speed shop and museums
   Spouses and kids events

think outside the Box ... during the meeting I raised my hand for another Fresca and somehow I volunteered for this

For the record,    Hot Air Balloon Rides with bungee jumping
                        Jello wrestling with Vinny
                        Pin the tail-on-the Howard
Have all been ruled out

If you have a idea let's hear it         Thanks, Brian

Here's thinking out of the box.  How about we bring a SAAC convention north of the border.  Maybe the suburbs of Toronto, Vancouver or Calgary. It could be attractive for our US brothers as they would be getting a 35% discount on the currency exchange.

We've had a major league team in Canada for 39 years.  Maybe we can get a SAAC convention Chug a Lug

Locations are always under review, costs track availability membership location to tracks are some of the many variables

But say we hit your favorite track, when we all get there what do you want to see and do at the convention ?

Trying to forecast your needs and desires going down the road......

Thank you for asking.  I've only been to 3 conventions but my favorite activity so far was our escorted evening downtown takeover in Elkhart Lake.  I like the more laid back evening atmosphere outside together WITH OUR CARS.  That being said, I would love to see something like an evening drag racing session.  I also like the idea of anything involving large numbers of our Shelby cars on the road together (again, that was one of the cool things about Elkhart Lake) at the same time for some type of cruise/tour/whatever...

The concours and popular vote shows must continue to be a staple part of the event.  I know track time is fun for many, but perhaps we can consider doing that every other year so we can have more flexibility with venues and timelines?  Again, I have limited experiences with conventions.  I do plan to come to Indy this year, though.  Chug a Lug

Indy is shaping up very nicely, the facilities at the track are first rate ( well it's Indy ) Accommodations are set
For those of you who only come to select conventions. The chance to drive Indy is a bucket list item
thanks for your comments, they will all be considered and discussed

Accommodations are set?  Have they announced the host hotel?  Are they taking bookings?  I'm only asking cause I don't wanna miss out.

For my 'other marque' convention, the committee was able to get the ENTIRE hotel for the attendees, ie, ONLY attendees were able to book a room for the three
day weekend.   This allowed complete decorating of the lobby with posters, memorabilia, cars, along with having little meeting rooms set aside for swap meets,
tech meetings, display rooms, etc.   We also had our Friday night reception and Saturday night banquet at the hotel.   So, everyone who crossed paths in the
hotel were convention goers, with no Ma and Pa Kettle vacationers getting in the way.  What a GREAT atmosphere!    This was at the Princeton, NJ Marriott which
had probably the nicest staff (all weekend long, too) I've ever encountered.

This 'other marque' group is probably a quarter of the size of SAAC so I don't know if this would be possible but at least try to make the host hotel a real host, other
than just a price break.

Just my thoughts,   Thanks!

There is what seems to be a group that loves "track time", a group that loves the "judging/shows", and some that like/want both.

My guess is that it will be hard to please both, but Kudos for asking for feedback and ideas.   Chug a Lug

Have we ever approached Mid-America or MCA to gather some of their best practices?  I learned yesterday that Mid-America has a ton a top name sponsors and get about 1000 cars at their event for a number of activities.  I'm not advocating that SAAC needs to be that big, or have that type of draw, but I thought they may have learned how to make the event bigger, better and more cost effective for the attendees.

Personally, I love the judging and seeing the cars.  I also agree that having a few more "driving" events or taking over a venue like a town's main street or a key restaurant or marquee location would be fun.

Again, I think asking for feedback is wonderful and I'm sure will give you some awesome ideas.

Hotels are always given a high priority, remember some track locations are not secured as early as others. Meaning Hotels selections are sometimes reduced. It's a whole discussion in it's
self, one that the planning staff is always considering. Yes one central Hotel that offers everything is ideal and always preferred.

As to looking over the fence at other clubs. Yes we do SAAC was at MCA Indy last year to observe in a non official capacity. Obviously many members of SAAC belong to many different car clubs. I personally belong to 4 different Ford related clubs each with it's own set of rules and show setups. So conversations and idea's are shared.

But again once track and Hotel locations are secured, what do you want to do or see

Like ITHERTZ replied I would like to see more time spent with the cars for those not participating on the track.  More evening cruises would be great.  I would love to see more stuff for family members to do as well. There is no way I would be able to convince my wife to spend the day at Fontana with nothing else to do. While I do enjoy watching the cars on the track a lot of us non track guys are kind of left out.

Chicken egg,...

Size matters

If participantion is up then there are more cars.
More cars means more to look at and more vendors selling product.
Like swap meet but also a booth for companies like Simpson etc.
Recall seeing a full Simpson set up at WGI and Wisconsin.

Ideas....

Like this coming convention could be 50th of 67 cars.
Following could be a big 68 blowout
2019 could be a 50th for 69 Shelby but also Boss cars 50th.

We need to run with the ball on that low hanging fruit.
