I have started the dis-assembly of the original motor from SFM5S147. The oil pan on it looks very original but it does not have the S1MS part # cast into it. Was there an early version of the COBRA T-oil pan that did not have the S1MS part number? I am pretty proficient at spotting the differences found on reproduction pans. This one has all the identifying characteristics of the other original pans I own but is diffent only in it lacks the casting part #.

Great question, Paul.  The early pans did not have the S1MS part number.  Apparently these oil pans with no part number were put on quite a few of the cars in the second batch too.

5S162 has its original pan.  It does not have the S1MS part number either.

While on the subject, I thought I'd post a picture of my oil pan drain plug, which I believe is original to my Shelby, as is the pan.  Since I just changed my oil, I thought I'd take a picture of it, because that's one of the few parts that I believe we haven't discussed before.  Also, one has to be pretty skinny to get a picture of it when it's in place.  Does it appear to be the original plug to ya'll?

5S071 has its original pan and doesn't have the S1MS either.  I've seen a number of early pans and spoken or e-mailed to a number of owners who were concerned about this detail.  As for the drain plug, Dorman is an aftermarket supplier.  I was under the impression that the drain plugs were smooth heads but I'll leave it to the experts.

If it has the S1MS number, it will be on a rectangular pad on the outside,  directly under about the #4 main bearing cap.

Well, my pan has that rectanular pad and some numbers (couldn't read them clearly through a mirror), if not the correct drain plug.

When I owned 5S368 it did not have the S1MS # on the pan.  A few people said it was not original but I wasn't sure.  It also was attached by the phillips screws.  I might be able to dig up some old photos.

There have been re-pops made both with and without the S1MS number cast into them.  The pans are heavier because they're thicker and, when present, the "S1MS" is not as well-defined.
