   Tim,
Is a jute backed mat ok for a '68.5? Just curious because that's what was in my '68.54 CJ fb.

The mat in questions seems to have nice crisp fold marks.  Wouldn't a factory mat be too thick to create such folds?
Also, I believe that the Athol brand felting appeared in the 80's.

And then the mat.

Is jute backing like a burlap?

Are you referring to the color, material or pattern (burlap is a woven material)?

No need to get pissy. Jeff was simply trying to clarify your question since you were unfamiliar with the terminology . Jeffs response was meant in a friendly helpful way and not a ridiculing one   Chug a Lug .

Sorry you missed my intent - it was only meant to clarify your question before a response.

Here are a few views of the backing on a plaid with burtex mats I have - you decide Wink

  Here's another one in a '66 coupe.

notice the crack at the bottom ? That is the problem with the rubber backed 65/66 mats is that they cracked with age as they got brittle. Even NOS ones get brittle and being folded up they are  likely to develop cracks just from the process of being unfolded when put into service.

To answer the posts about 68 mats, the plaid version I have seen in 68s is fabric woven material not vinyl and it has stiched corners like the 67's. It is probably the most uncommon of 68 mats.
Randy regarding the underlayment, I think when you say jute you mean the brownish woven material then yes.

Thanks as always Tim. The backing is jute and it is a hand sewn Burtex mat as you describe.
BTW , heading to the Big 3 @ Qualcom next Sat. are you going? PM is you are.
