In the High Mountains of New Mexico

« on: November 25, 2012, 04:57:20 PM »

I got into an interesting conversation over on the Shelby TDB about the new 2013 GT350s.  I seems the early (2 months ago) brochures and the pictures on the SAI website showed the GT350s for 2013 having the front fender side badges that are the 1967 style Shelby GT350, changed from the 2012's "Powered by Ford" badges.  I ordered my GT350 off the set of pictures and brochures available at that time and thus expected the '67 style badges.  They changed the badges a few weeks ago back to the "Powered by Ford" things, so cars built now and the rest of the model year get the non-Shelby "Powered by Ford" instead of the '67 Shelby GT350s.  An SAI official says they made the change because Ford told or "asked" them to do it.  Interesting Ford gets involved in such things.  I really don't like those tacky looking PBF badges, so SAI has offered to put a set of the '67 Shelby GT350 badges in the trunk so I can change them when I get the car.  Just seems funny they would change in mid-production at Ford's "wishes".  But, whatever....

You will see exactly how much clout they have when they stop paying the bills. There is only reason SAI survives....because Ford wants them too.

Most people just don't notice but slight model year changes (tho inefficient) are not that atypical.
I remember a relative getting an MDX and one could no longer get dark blue.
Go figure.
Or on a 90 LX 5.0 I enquired about yellow and they were no longer making it.
Couldn't order and none left on the lots anywhere.

Probably a trademark issue and what SAI is licensed to use. If you remember in the 80s CS sued Ford over them using GT350 and lost.

If you read all the fine print, it would lead you to believe that what you order may not be what you get..

Like anything else these days you know.  You order Bolognese at a restaurant and is the sauce 100% beef like it should be?  Like traditionally it always was.  And it was last time but now it comes on a different pasta and the sauce has veal and pork in it.

In 1970 you walk into a Ford dealer and order a mustang fastback black with red guts.
You get Vermillion.
There u go.

I agree Shelbys viability without Ford's financial support is very questionable.

I guess I didn't realize how dependent SAI is on Ford financially, that certainly explains the badge switch, but I am still amazed Ford would care what badges are on the car, they don't insist on "Powered by Ford" on the other SAI conversions, why this one?

I would not be surprised if you see Ford change gears and stop their financial support all together. Why should they continue the brand, now that Shelby has passed? They could get more mileage out of a younger face. Shelbys last race wins were what built his reputation and those were decades ago.....
