Bob, are these the S7MS "tear-drop" folding style wrenches you are discribing that are not correct for a '66?
The one is a 3/4" (MagStar) and the other is a 13/16" (10-Spoke) correct for '67's?
Yes ,those are the ones you pictured. They are appropreate for 67 but not 66 IMHO.Bob

The original question was the wrench used for a 66 10-spoke car. I believe Cory's picture shown in Reply #6 shows what was in the trunk for those cars....the standard (crappy) Mustang ratchet wrench which would operate the jack (until it broke...), and the simple 7/8" socket wrench for the 10-spoke (and Cragar) lug nuts.

That is what I always thought too. Anyone have any evidence of anything different?

I have a 66 10 spoke lug wrench so I will look tomorrow but 6S1640s pictures I think are correct.

These type of questions are a reoccurring theme on the Forum. Is it possible for those who have the correct lug wrenches for the different wheels to post pictures in the Concours section where members could look or be directed to go? Since there were many wheel packages available in certain years it might help to have a data base of pictures. Does this sound plausible?

I'd be happy to save all of the photos & make the post if anyone else is not interested.

550 had the standard jack and ratchet lug wrench, when I bought it. Don't know if it was original, but with the few miles it had, could have been.Ron

Here's another type of crappy ratchet type lug wrench, notice the different shape of handle? Dave so which one do you think is the "original" wrench for a 66? Thanks - Doug

Have to admit I've never seen one of the 10 spoke lug wrenches that is in Cory's (6S1640) picture, only the ratchet handles. Are these really scarce or have I just led a sheltered Shelby life?

The top "closed handle" wrench in Dave's pic is correct for 66 and I think at least most 65's??? Definitely for 66... I think the bottom wrench with the open handle is more of a 64.5 thing but not sure when the change was made. I also believe it is the style currently reproduced. (another) Dave

Hi All,
The 10 spoke lug wrench I posted are very rare. I found an original at the Portland Oregon swap meet about 5 years ago or so, but only after I purchased a nice reproduction form Shelby Parts and Restoration. (I have an extra now I don't need.) I think one thing that makes them rare, they really are not adequate for the job and I expect the handle would bend if you actually try to remove a lug nut, torqued to 90+ ft-lbs. I expect people tossed them after they were bent, and that is why they are now rare. I will photo the pair together for comparison later. Jim did a real nice job reproducing the wrench. I believe they were essential hand made as opposed to mass produced. I expect a machine shop was contracted to make a bunch, like 1000 or so, just a guess for both the 65's and 66's.

Thanks S2MS Dave , that is what I thought as the closed type round handle shaft seems more common. Doug, Here's a picture of the repro early style jack handle, as shown in a Virginia Classic Mustang blog recently. Here's the link http://blog.virginiaclassicmustang.com/2012/01/mustang-ratchet-style-jack-handle.html

Hi All,
Attached is a photo of an original and Shelby Parts and Restoration repop ten spoke lug wrench. I realized later I posted the repop in the earlier post. The original has lost its finish and rust easier. Can someone tell me the finish I might have replaced onto the original?
The 7/8 sockets parts appear to be identical. The handle on the repop is slightly longer by a 3/8 at 12 inches and the compression on the bar ends of the repop allow the bar to seat further into the socket. This variation could be just manufacture tolerance variations, I assume copied from an original. I would have to see or hear from other owners of original wrenches to draw any conclusion on the features to find a pattern. The original wrench bar measures 11 and 5/8 inch.
The SP&R repop is very nicely done. I checked with Jim and he currently does not have any for sale or in work.
Thanks
Cory

Just FYI, here are the three styles of ratchet lug wrenches that I have come across. I believe the wide handle with closed hex on the back side was first, then the wide handle with open hex and finally the most common one with the rounded handle. I'll enjoy reading anyone's comments
