Somebody could take a pic of this car then on the road at least. It appeared 2004 at Le Mans.
Not many are available from that event and not since that year.

Not saying anything, but it seems there are some questions remaining. Actually the previous owners are not interested in finding out about their big loss, but were pretty sure it was destroyed at that yard.

A monstrous offense to an R model. Downright sacrilege.

In today's world yes, but back then it was the only way to keep racing.

At least the roof has been put back in place in a more recent photo from 2004.
TransAmEd has posted that before.

No, it looks like 539 finished her life with the hard top roof stil welded on it , the car that showed  up in france can't be 539 if we follow step by step the pictures and story that transamED has been studied for many years  .

Wolfgang's interview of Claude Dubois had a side note where Claude identified the car at the Le Mans Classic in 2004(?) when it appeared there that one and only time. Perhaps this is in question now, but that was how I read it.

It looks like the last vintage race we may know of was still in the hardtop form in April 11, 1971 at Salzburg (TranAmEd's two photos in reply #14)

The last vintage race of 5R539 in hardtop form was in mid 1972 according to the race pass, and it was parked in the Jüntgens body shop for the 1973 season due to other race cars being used by the team, finally removed to a wrecking yard acc. to all the owners, later attempts to find any remaining traces of it failed.
That is where that story of the 5R539 hardtop body ends.

It is easy to verify and authenticate the other car in Belgium with a Ford VIN. As of now it is only registered due to previous owners or current owners input, the sections "Verification" and "Guarantee" in the SAAC bible on page 6/7 refer to that kind of status.  If a VIN and a visible stamping is verified and authenticated one day on that other body, the story of 5R539 is continued. If not, it ended 1973.

Thanks for that last race info and clarification on the other fastback body.
