Are the vin tag rivets just ordinary pop rivets? It's been so long since I took it off to restore my car, I don't remember.

The Feds antitheft laws required rivets that weren't common off the shelf items. Your best (cheapest) bet is to take a look at them and get a small file set and make your own. If I remember the 69 tag attaching holes are hidden by the dashpad so it wouldn't matter.

Do you have a lot of examples of rosette rivets being used on 1969 Shelbys?

I've seen enough 68, 69 and 70 cars and no rosette rivets ever from what I saw. Seems to be a standard pop rivet. Aluminum as none were ever "rusted". Even the 70 replaced vin tags  on Shelbys a standard looking rivet.

No - and since they are hidden I suspect the Ford bean counters would opt for saving .00001 cents per rivet by using standard aluminum ones rather than stainless with special heads.

By 1970 I know there were rosette ones used on Mustangs depending on date and where the car was made. Not sure if that started in 1969 or any of the details for that matter!

my 70 GT350 the new VIN tag had standard rivets(replaced at KK fall of 69?)Ditto for my GT500. My Metuchin May 69 Mach1 has standard rivets. I have replaced many dash pads in 69s and do not recall those special rosette rivets. A coworker has a bunch of rosette rivets-or should I say his dad still has them from his years at GM.
