Great site to check out if you haven't stumbled upon it already.  Includes lots of great history relating to him racing for Carroll Shelby and his friendship with Zora Duntov.

I have always found the Indy 500 section both intriguing and ultimately tragic. The brilliance of Mickey Thompson and the unyielding rule of USAC. Innovation years ahead of it's time, that period of the Indy 500 technical experimentation was unequaled in the race's history.

It's always good to see the entire story told.
