Title: New build
Post by: Lizard on January 19, 2015, 06:54:31 PM
Hi all,  I own a '70 GT 500 (#2436) and decided that instead of modding the '70 that I would build a car the way I want it from the ground up.  I'm not calling this a tribute, replica or a clone.  I decided on a '68 fastback with '67 Shelby exterior mods.  There will be NO Shelby badges, nomenclature or stripes.

At this time, I think it will be Springtime Yellow with a black interior.  (The car's original finish was Turquoise.)  5.0 Aluminator XS, Tremec 6 speed.  Jongbloed 8x10.5 wheels.  Detroit Speed Mini tubs.  Griggs Racing f/r coil over suspension.

Ok, Springtime Yellow got my curiosity up I had to find out what it looked like.
Nice color for sure. Not overwhelming. Don't forget to register your car in the
Yellow Mustang Registry! http://www.yellowmustangregistry.com/ (http://www.yellowmustangregistry.com/)
Keep the pictures/updates coming. Camera

Yep!  I saw that pic.  SY has always been one of my favorite Mustang colors.  My choices were Brittany Blue, Springtime Yellow and Vintage Burgundy.  My wife voted for SY and since she's "onboard" for the build, I opted for that color.

I've found if you wait for a sale or get a discount coupon at a show that Summit can have some great prices on transmissions

I've bought two trans conversion kits from modern as well.

I have been thinking about this picture. With the nicely modified shock towers, I would have guess you already stiffened up the front quite a bit. Was this exterior tubing done cause you felt that the new shock tower was not as stout?

A friend just sent me the link to the Stacey David BOSS 9 into 67' Cougar build.

They completely eliminated the shock towers. FWIW, I think your shock tower mod is the way to go and would be strong.

Here is the link to that project if interested.

I have no idea, lol.  It was on the car when i bought it.  However, my builder, Bob Brawn, has been all over it.  He enlarged the hood scoop to fit over the Aluminator XS's intake.  Seamless.

For me, the wow factor is in the shock towers. Lots of guys eliminate them completely. Not only does it look "not right", but I am sure they loose resistance to twisting and other deflection.

Firewall is sweet too.

Looks like a serious pro touring build.

I like this color combination so much that I had to chime in.
They always seem to casually be called "Gulf colors" and that blue is often referred to as "Gulf Blue."

To set the record straight, they are properly known as "Powder Blue" and "Marigold."

Kudos to you for choosing these iconic colors for your New Build, and I look forward to following your progress!

Lizard - Great vision on the build and your body man in SC is to be commended. Not only beautiful work but for a 1 man shop, he's moving right along. A quick question - whose pedal assembly and MC setup did you end up using? Wilwood or someone elses? Like the change to the instruments - really nice! Keep the pictures coming.

The triple reservoir MC is from Kugel Komponents.  Tried another one first from JAR(?) but it turned out to be too big.
Tried the Wilwood pedals but decided to forgo those and I can't remember what we used.  Will check and edit this post when i find out.  The gas pedal is from Lokar.

Ha, thats taking it to another level.  I changed my mind after seeing a '68 Shelby GT 500 at an auction on tv.  It looked too bland or something.  I'm happy with what I ended up with.

#1132 raced at Sebring in '71 and '72 in the "B" production class. I wonder if it was in the Gulf colors back then.
The "R" model covered quarter windows were a nice touch. Noticed the widened rear fender arches. Good stuff!

Looking forward to your next update!

That my friend is one fantastic build,if I wasn't hung up on day two vintage race cars and parts I would be leaning in this direction. Looks like all the best components are being used and should bring lots of smiles when finished and dynoed. Best of luck and keep us posted on the numbers it makes and the places it will go. :cool1

i'm thinking that they didn't hit the 8250 rpm limit is because it was a new engine.  Pretty sure it may have hit some higher numbers but i'm very happy.  Torque curve is really flat!

Title: Re: New build

I have never seen a pull where torque and horsepower didn't cross at 5250 rpm.

Title: Re: New build
Post by: Lizard on February 11, 2017, 12:41:22 PM
Ok, after a little Google searching, I came up with this on norotors.com:

"Most wheel dyno programs "scale" the horsepower and torque curves to fit them neatly on the same graph, and that is what's done to yours.  Compare the numbers at the right and left sides of the graph."

I'm a little dense but I can't seem to grasp it, lol.

I was finally able to pick it up today.  The guy doing the alignment talked to Bruce Griggs of Griggs Racing a few times to try and get the alignment and suspension adjusted.  The support helped.  The car rides better than I thought it would and handles like its on rails.  No discernible body lean thru curves giving the driver plenty of confidence.  Really....the only disturbing time I had was when I tried to shift from 4th to 3rd on the highway when I was actually in 3rd and hit 2nd, lol!  Thank goodness it has an 8250 redline.....The car was a hit at the local Cars n Coffee.  Absolutely loving it.....

Yep, have put almost 800 miles on it recently.  Runs great.  2000 rpm at 80mph in 6th.  A couple small issues have been sorted out.  Going to have to go to an 18x9 front wheel.  Those 10.5s are just too wide for the front.  Also, it tends to backfire when downshifting for a stop.  Possibly the cutouts?  Thats annoying.  May have to replace the cutouts with an X pipe.  I'll shoot some pics soon, thanks!

Isn't backfiring a fuel/tune issue on a 5.0?

I know to dial in the best power curve on a Supercharged 5.4L I was willing to accept a little backfire on deceleration. Of course the flames out the tail end are kind of cool too.    :D

I've asked an experienced engine builder/racer and he says its most likely the cutouts.  Not sure if fire is shooting out but if it is...I may leave it as it is.    HeadSpin

And of course.....the wheels that came in had the wrong lug nut spacing.  Not only that but they aren't making that wheel in a 9" width any more.
So....8" width it is.  One wheel (!) came in today and hopefully the other tomorrow?  Isn't this fun?
