Yes, not a Shelby but then they removed the drain plug, a big wow as to what came out.

This guy reminds me of my life in Toronto as he is like the types of garages I would frequent watching guys working on muscle cars in the 70s and 80s. He brings back many fond memories for me of growing up in Scarborough, Ontario. He has quite a good channel. Here is one where he dynos a Boss 302 though he is a Mopar guy. He fixes everything.

Enjoy.

It would appear that the distributor rotor is 180* in the wrong direction. Maybe he should stick to Mopars? ::)

Hmm, It looked to me like the rotor was at number 1 at 18:20, because it looked like at 18:00 he brought up the #1 piston on TDC by taking the spark plug out.
Surely he knows compression stroke.

There is a scene in which he is looking at the timing mark, the cap is off, and it is 180 off.
I personally have made that mistake myself and can attest to the flames as being a byproduct of that situation.
I take everyone's word here that he knows what he is doing but observation would suggest otherwise.
In any case, if it were me, I certainly wouldn't document this on video unless he just enjoys the entertainment spectacle of bad mouthing Ford's? On that one, I've experience that a few times myself.
If that were my engine, I'd want to know why my expensive original carb was flamed?
In any case after seeing this video, I'm not a fan. He is pompous egotist, self appointed. I avoid those folks. Simply put, "they are a legend in their own mind".
In my early days I was told to shut up, get rid of my pimples and get a hair cut. In no case did those dictating that gain respect from me as a result. Now I have the money to choose better experts to do my work and the wisdom to see the benefits. I have no confrontation with them, I just stay away in droves.
This guy is a no on my go to list. Good to see in advance exactly why. :o

For the Buick, that "oil" is sometimes referred to as "milkshake" by the Buick guys (yep BAD news)... not to mention the melted piston.
I didn't watch the whole thing, but pretty sure that they said the customer "just bought it", and was "pushing it hard". Unfortunately, those results are pretty easy to achieve with a modified GN - until you get a better idea of what you are doing ???
IMHO, he should be taking that '86 to more of a turbo-Buick shop for repair.

Looks like a stock motor. Newbie getting a lesson on detonation. I got into the Buick stuff in 85. Those cars are amazing with the power they put out AND live ! Hemi made 500 hp. Buick with a good tune an minor upgrades would be there very easily. We have had a few 8). Daughter races one. 9.0s @ 146 with pump gas and methanol injection (looking for the 8's) . Power everything with AC.

^^^ Thanks Dan.
(That is quite the "show off" photo :o)

Thank you for the astute observations all. I didn't know about the 180 off thing and looked it up. I got taken in by the video. Not all experts are experts so it seems.

Back in 2000.. Wife an both kids had Buicks. Now I am looking around for a late 60's Hemi car. Variety is the spice of life. ;D

I never watch you tube engine videos.
I watched the Boss302 video.
Serious question.
They seriously do this for a living?
I’m going back to my policy of not watching this stuff. These guys need to spend a little bit more time on very very basic engine function before touching expensive engines.

+1! ;)

Not to be at odds with anyone; but it just goes to show what a turbo can do to change an otherwise turd, into a revered diamond. And this comment is based on the familiarlarity gained having several of these engines thru our shop. ;)
YUCK! The thing (engine, as I wont get into opinions of body styling) looks just like what it started out as, a cheap grocery getter, but then it got a TURRRRRBO! But then, I guess it doesn't matter what it looks like, or how it gets' it done! :o

I drag tested at least two new Grand Nationals and GNXs every year they were out. Drag tested Kenne-Bell's numerous super-quick versions too.
The 3800 proved to be a good little engine, with proper tuning/blower(s). I liked the Grand Nationals & GNXs as cars too. If you wanted tire-roasting burnouts, just get the boost up before launch and bye bye rear Goodyears. The crappy GM 4-speed automatic was a veritable POS however.
(And let's not forget the 3800 Turbo usage in GMC Syclone and Typhoon too.)
Back in those woeful dark days of the mid-'80s, the Z28, Trans Am, Mustang GT and Grand National were all there was domestically, outside of the Vette, to get excited about. And a new GNX would smoke the same-year Vette.

...AND HE BITCHES ABOUT FORDS. That guy's a dip s hit. An efin dip s hit.
The Mo par guys never were too bright to begin with...and WHY would you document it on video?
OK. I'll be nice now. He did get the decals on straight.

It's just a "YANKEE" thing (I swear there's something in the water up there! :o ), see it all the time; after all, when they retire from up there, they all move down here to Florida.............and then tell us all about how they did it better up north! ::)
